I recently attended a seminar with other chamber of commerce executives that focused on the changing role of chambers in today’s economy.  As we compete with various business organizations for memberships and revenue dollars, it is important to identify our unique service promise that sets us apart from the competition.

Most chambers have their basic roots in the “town booster” type organization that competed with neighboring communities for trade, tourism, and economic development.  In the 1950’s and 1960’s chambers placed a major emphasis on industrial activities because they believed that new industrial jobs would solve all community problems. In the 1970’s the role for chambers expanded to socioeconomic concerns.  They came to understand that the health and vitality of the business sector are affected by the health and vitality of the community.

It is now generally accepted that the role of the modern chamber of commerce is to promote economic development and to work for a continuous upgrading of the community.   We are no longer asking our members what they want our chamber to do for them.  Instead, we are asking what kind of community they want to live and work in.

Today’s chambers of commerce are more active in political affairs, realizing that problems facing most businesses can best be dealt with in the legislative arena.  Chambers have a great power and influence through the factual information they provide and the ability to keep chamber members motivated to communicate regularly with their legislators.

The Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary federation of business and professional people working together to build a healthy economy and to improve the quality of life in Northern Anne Arundel County.  Our Chamber members are businesses, organizations, and individuals concerned with the socioeconomic climate of our community.  These businesses have joined NAACCC because they know they stand a better chance of getting things done when they speak as one voice.  Our Chamber provides the means through which businesses can work together to the benefit of all.

We are a non-profit mutual benefit corporation that invests time and money to carry forward programs relevant to our members’ needs.  NAACCC provides networking events that allow our members to share information about themselves and their businesses in order to build their client base and market themselves throughout the county.   We provide business education classes so that our businesses can stay on top of new technology and learn strategies to help them work faster and more efficiently.   We provide legislative information so that our businesses will know what proposed bills will directly impact them personally and professionally.  We provide access to county services to help your business survive and thrive.  And we provide information and access to the local school system so that businesses can be actively involved in training tomorrow’s work force.

Local communities are what their citizens make them.  The Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is the vehicle through which the community’s needs are met.
